Research activity is organised around the broad theme of environmental governance. Particular emphasis is given to:
The application of integrated management systems to the planning and management of natural resources
This work focuses on two main areas. The first area of interest relates to the development of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) structures and processes. Recent work has explored the role of socio-economic and cultural aspects of coastal systems and concentrated on the development of social and institutional capacity. Work in this topic has been undertaken for the Scottish Executive . The second area of interest concerns the adoption of integrated environmental management approaches within national parks. Work has recently been completed which explored the role of public and private decision making networks within national parks in Scotland.
The role of environmental appraisal within environmental decision making
Early work on this theme concentrated on the development of capacity within Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the assessment of EIA systems. Much of this work was undertaken for DGXI within the European Commission . Recent work has focused on the use of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) as a tool for integration within decision-making. Specific emphasis has been given to the use of SEA within fragmented and competitive decision making structures.
The role of land use planning in the conservation of coastal resources
Research in this area has explored the capacity of spatial planning to deliver conservation benefits. Initial research on this theme was undertaken for the EU Northern Periphery Programme and focused upon the use of spatial planning arrangements in the management of fisheries resources. This work has recently been extended to explore the relationship between spatial planning and ICZM.
